Project Learning Tree

The Earth Lessons Program (ELP) integrates environmental education into the classroom, fostering a connection between students and nature. This program encourages children to observe and explore their surroundings while promoting critical thinking and environmental stewardship. Teachers are equipped with the necessary training, resources, and support to engage students with nature and cultivate an understanding of their local ecosystems. The program includes schools in both urban and rural settings, aiming to develop environmentally conscious citizens who feel a strong sense of community and responsibility.

Project Objectives

  • Develop students' sensibilization, appreciation, skills and commitment for navigating environmental issues.
  • Provide a framework for students to apply scientific knowledge and complex reasoning skills to solve environmental problems.
  • Help students acquire understanding and tolerance of different points of view about environmental matters.
  • Develop attitudes and actions based on analysis and evaluation of available information.
  • Encourage creativity, originality and flexibility to solve environmental problems and issues.
  • Inspire and empower students to become responsible, productive and participating members of society.
  • Teaching students how, rather than what, to think about complex environmental matters.

PLT today

LUMIN provided Centro Ceibal with access to “Project Learning Tree” (PLT), as a contribution to public education and the Ceibal program. After signing the agreement, LUMIN as licensee of the program for the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), gave up its access to the platform to the Ceibal Program, so they can be the ones continuing the work on the accepted commitments to education.

This way, the program that has been successfully implemented in Tacuarembó and Rivera since 2012, is now extended nation-wide and reaches every student and teacher with access to a Ceibalita laptop.

With this donation, 96 lessons and activities in Spanish from the program have been delivered to be shared by Centro Ceibal through their Ceibal Program platform, with the goal of giving primary and high school students and teachers access to them.
